Our Story
Orthopaedic Rehabilitation and Medical Services Sierra Leone (ORMS-SL) is a disabled-person’s organization that operates in Sierra Leone, a small West African coastline-country with a population of about seven million people. The organization is formed on the backdrop of compassion and interest in helping the disabled, and in bringing them hope.
In early 2004, the founder of ORMS and a brother disabled formed an organization named Kyphoscoliosis Initiative for Therapy and Empowerment (KITE). This organization in the past sixteen (16) years has been helping vulnerable Sierra Leoneans in various capacities, i.e. empowerment and medical. After years of active service, disagreements arose between KITE-SL and its main donor, its two founders, and its volunteers. This resulted to the standstill of KITE. As a passionate disabled person, the founder thought it fitting to form another DPO rather than to have KITE hold up the services that should be rendered to disabled persons. As an Orthopaedic technician himself, he thought of forming ORMS-SL, an organization that will prioritize orthopaedic and medical services for, but not limited to, disabled persons.
Sierra Leone has been one of the Africa Countries that practice the belief that disability is not inability. Hence, ORMS-SL believe’s that It is time the disabled be helped to learn skills and be relocated from the streets! It is time for the disabled to have equal access to medical and other services! It is time for the disabled to become equal contributors to society.
